1. The definition of metallic materials

Metallic materials are materials with some properties. They often have lustre, ductility, easy conductivity and heat transfer. They are generally divided into two types: ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals include iron, chromium, manganese and other metals. Iron and steel are the basic structural materials and are called the "bones of industry". Due to advances in science and technology and the widespread use of new chemical materials and non-metallic materials, the number of alternatives to steel has increased and the demand for steel has declined. For example, aluminum is now used in a wide range of building materials and I will introduce some building materials that are about aluminum.

2. Types of metallic materials

Metallic materials are usually divided into ferrous, non-ferrous and special metallic materials.

① Ferrous metals, also known as iron and steel materials, include industrial pure iron with a total impurity content of less than 0.2% and a carbon content of no more than 0.0218%, steel containing 0.0218% to 2.11% carbon, and cast iron containing more than 2.11% carbon. Broadly speaking, ferrous metals also include chromium, manganese and their alloys.

② Non-ferrous metals refer to all metals and their alloys except iron and steel, chromium and manganese, which are usually divided into light metal, heavy metal, precious metal, semimetal, rare metal, rare earth metal and so on. The strength and hardness of non-ferrous alloys are generally higher than those of pure metals, and they have high resistance and small resistance temperature coefficient.

③ Special metallic materials include structural metallic materials and functional metallic materials for different applications. Among these are amorphous metallic materials obtained by rapid condensation processes, quasicrystal, microcrystal and nanocrystalline, and alloys with special functions and metal matrix composites.

3. Special properties of metallic materials

(1) Fatigue

Many mechanical parts and engineering components are subjected to alternating loads. Under the effect of alternating loads, they will also suddenly brittle fracture after a long period of repeated cycles of stress although the stress level is below than the yield limit of the material, and this phenomenon is called the fatigue of metal materials.

(2) Plasticity

Plasticity refers to the ability of a metal material to produce permanent deformation (plastic deformation) without being damaged under the action of external forces.

(3) Durability

It is the main form of corrosion of construction metals.

(4) Hardness

Hardness indicates the ability of a material to resist the pressure of a hard object into its surface. It is one of the important performance indicators of metal materials. Generally, the higher the hardness, the better the abrasion resistance.

4. Specific properties of metallic materials

(1) Mechanical property

The mechanical property of metal refers to the ability of metals to resist deformation and fracture when subjected to external forces under certain temperature conditions, it includes strength, plasticity, hardness, fatigue, impact toughness.

(2) Chemical property

The chemical property of metals refers to the property of metals that cause chemical reactions with other substances. In practical applications, the main consideration is the corrosion resistance of metals, oxidation resistance, as well as the influence of compound that is formed by the reaction of different metals, metals and nonmetals. Among the chemical properties of metals, corrosion resistance is of great significance to metals.

(3) Physical properties

The physical properties of metals are mainly considered in terms of density, melting point, expansion property, magnetic and electrical property.

(4) Process property

The process property refers to the adaptability of metals to various processing methods, and there are four main aspects: cutting performance, malleability, castability and weldability.

5. Examples of metallic materials

(1) Color coated aluminum coil

Color coated aluminum coil is made by coloring the surface of aluminum alloy. The aluminum alloy is very stable and difficult to be corroded, so generally the surface layer can be guaranteed not to fade for at least 30 years after special treatment, and because of its low density and high hardness, the weight per unit volume is the lightest among metal materials. The greatest advantage over plastic steel is its incomparable robustness, the various color and the fact that it will not be questioned about being toxic. It can be used for the decoration and protection of facades, canopies, roofs and columns.

(2) Aluminum honeycomb panel

Honeycomb panels are panels made from two thinner panels firmly bonded to a thicker honeycomb core on both sides, also known as a honeycomb sandwich structure. The metal honeycomb panels are made up of two high strength metal panels with an aluminum honeycomb core, the whole process is done in a modern factory, using hot press forming technology, due to the high heat transfer value between the aluminum skin and the honeycomb, the thermal expansion and contraction of the inner and outer aluminum skins are synchronised; there are small holes in the aluminum honeycomb skins so that the gas inside the panels can flow freely; the slidable installation buckle system does not cause structural deformation during thermal expansion and contraction and is durable. It also has a flat surface, is not easily deformed and impact resistant, and has good cushioning properties, making it suitable for a variety of applications in transport and industrial or architectural fields.
